Art : Silver decorations

In the past, Hmong people decided to make silverware decorations because they were unfamiliar with gold. They have a story about this: ‘A god tells a man to wake up early in the morning and hit everything that passes over him. At that time he saw yellow things pass over him – but he didn’t hit them. The second time he saw something white pass over him, but again he didn’t hit it. The last time he saw something black pass over, so he hit it and told l the god about this. The god said “Gold and the silver pass over you. You don’t hit them but you hit the iron, so you must use it to make your working tools and earn your living. Since that time, Hmong people haven’t known silver and gold. Hmong have done business with Chinese people, who showed them how to use silver and white gold to make decorations such as earrings, bracelets, bracelets for ankles, girdles etc.

The process to make silverware.
The first step

Press the silver grain so thin that it can be made into a silver bag, a silver belt, bracelets, anklets and earring. For the silver that is leftover, the maker presses it and makes it into necklaces, bracelets and earring.

The second step
Make a size or scale form model of what is to be made, and then put over the silver sheet on the wood that they prepare. They heat the wood so that the silver will stick to it.

The third step
Carve the design on the silver sheet. The design that they make is usually flowers, trees or animals. They connect each peace together and bend them to each other, then put the result in acid water (lemon) and scrub it to be white.

This is a model of a silver necklace. Usually they wear this decoration in their New Year ceremony.
